CAMP IN 2016
The Year 5/6 Team will be going to Living Springs for school camp next year. The dates are Wednesday 13 to Friday 15 April (2 nights). We will be sending information home in the first week of Term 1, 2016 and inviting parent offers of help at that stage.
3.11.15 Life Education & our health topic
We are focussing on friendship this term and have enjoyed two visits to the Life Education Trust caravan, where we looked at what makes a good friend, and explored factors such as; kindness, support, a good listener, leading not following, and respect. Any chance you have to discuss these things with your children would be great!
13.6.15 Welcome Back to Term 4
Nau Mai and welcome back to school for Term 4. This term we have lots going on as usual: athletics, a marae visit, Life Education Trust, El Grego, and our end of year assemblies. Keep your eyes open for the school newsletters and this site for further details.
Bays Cluster Speeches. Best of luck to Ava B who is competing for the school in the Bays Cluster Competition on Wednesday at Star of The Sea. Ava has progressed through her class, team, and school events to qualify. Fantastic effort and a great example of quality learning!
Jiu Jitsu. Neko B (R15) recently competed in the NZ Nationals in Auckland and ended up finishing fourth overall; a fantastic achievement only losing two fights and one of those was against the current NZ champion. Well done Neko!
Speed Skating Champion. Amelia S is awesome! She not only recently won the Juvenile Girls NZ National Championship but also won the Australian competition during the last holidays. We wouldn't be surprised to one day see Amelia at the winter olympics!

Y5/6 Speeches
We are currently in the process of writing arguments as part of persuasive writing. These will then effectively be our speeches. All the children are expected to complete their writing and give a speech. Each class will choose two Year 5 and two Year 6 children to take part in our Team's competition which will be on Wednesday the 26th of August. We will then choose the best three Year 5s and Year 6s to go to the school event on Monday the 31st August. From there, the winner will represent our school in the Bays Cluster event early in Term 4. It is important to us that all the children have a go and we will be encouraging them to do so. This writing is taking part in class but the children may choose to do some research at home or work on their speech on their Google account, if they have already started this.
South East Zone Tournament
On Friday the 31st July sixty Year 5/6 children played netball, soccer, rugby, and hockey at Hagley Park in the South East Zone Tournament. As usual our amazing children were positive, enthusiastic, and great fun to be with! They all demonstrated awesome SURFER values throughout. Our soccer teams both played very well and finished mid-table. Our hockey team did well too and actually beat one of the Year 7/8 teams. Both our netball team won their grades and the 'A' team will go on to the Canterbury Winter Tournament on Thursday 27th August, together with our fantastic rugby team who were undefeated and had no tries against! A huge thanks to Becky Nisbet, Fleur Howard, Joel Kendall, Brad Kirpatrick, Josh Hately, Gavin Barr, Gordon Coles, and Ange Burgess for their coaching and refereeing. We couldn't do it without you!
Year 5/6 Winter Sports Tournament
Over the past two terms the Year 5/6 team have competed in our own Winter Sports Tournament. Students were split into 10 teams which rotated around 5 different sports, playing one another in a round robin. The sports included moderated versions of netball, touch, basketball, hockey and football. Yesterday, we had our final round of games, with the Seahawkes and Cobras competing in the grand final and the Seahawkes coming out victorious.
Well done to all students who participated in the competitions, demonstrating their great sportsmanship skills and unity.

Cycle Safe Week 3
Cycle Safe starts on Monday 3 August for our Year 6 children. Notices and information has been sent home. The children have been put into one of three groups and each group will have Cycle safe for two whole days during the period Monday 3/8 to Monday 10/8. The children know their group and days and should have shared that with parents. If you are unsure please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher.
Group Two was originally going to miss out on the book week parade on Friday but will now be able to take part as we have arranged for Cycle safe to start at 10.00 that day. Those children will need to get changed or be wearing appropriate cycling clothing.
Lastly, we have a very limited number of bikes and helmets available for those children who don't have one.

The Year 5/6 Team entered an inter-school spelling competition hosted by Chisnallwood Intermediate and sponsored by The Otago Daily Times. Our amazing team only had one day to prepare themselves but did very well indeed scoring 85/100 points. The competition was won by a team who scored 97/100. Orana Park on Wednesday 25th March
Please make sure you are all at school ready to catch the bus at 9.00 on Wednesday. Non- parent helpers still welcome but will need to make their own way there and pay $15-00 entry at the gate.
We will still go if it's raining unless it's really horrible- jackets and gumboots please :)
Don't forget a good lunch, water bottle, sun-hat, school uniform, and sun block applied.

Today your child will have brought home a letter with details of our Orana Park trip next Wednesday the 25th March. We realize this is short notice but hope you can offer help on the day. We do need payment of this urgently- direct to the office please.
Home Learning 11/3/15
Last week we sent home the Home Learning packs for you to have a look through. if your child opts in to home learning (which we hope they do!) we suggest you use a clear-file to store all the paper and record sheets.
Each child's plan will be unique. Some will be able to do two or three challenges per term, others might do four in one term and one in another, for example. Each completed challenge should be presented in some way and a challenge sheet shown to the teacher for signing off. In addition to the Home Learning Challenges, your child will receive regular word study lists and maths home learning from their maths teacher. They will also be expected to complete the reading diary and show it to the teacher at least once per fortnight. Word study and maths are all due at school on Wednesdays. Thanks for your support. Tim Lowe Our Wednesday Interchange Term 1, 2015
Each Wednesday afternoon we interchange for: science, physical education, music, and visual arts. The emphasis is on 'hands-on' tasks. The children are all fully engaged and having fun while they learn!
